SERVPRO of Metairie outlines the difference between water and fire damage restoration

12/12/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Metairie explains the major differences between fire damage and water damage restoration.

Every property is at risk of water and fire damage. Water damage can result from pipe leaks, roof damage, flooding, sewage backup, or appliance malfunction. On the other hand, fire damages can happen due to appliance malfunction, mishandling candles, or issues with electricity connection.

Fire and water damage restoration are similar, but are they the same? The experts at SERVPRO of Metairie, a full-service restoration company in Harahan, examine the difference between fire and water damage restoration.

What is fire damage restoration?

When a part of your home or business is damaged by fire, you want it cleaned up and repaired as quickly as possible so that you can move on with your life. This aspect is what fire damage restoration entails.

It’s restoring a property damaged by fire and smoke to its preloss state.

The fire damage process begins with an assessment of the damaged area. The fire and water damage restoration specialist may need to board up any holes to protect the property from intruders. The process may involve erecting fencing around the property, clearing the area of debris, caulking gaps in the building, and sealing off or tarping the damaged part of your roof to protect the remaining portion of the building from the elements.

Once that’s done, they can start the restoration process by clearing any standing water.

Next, they will clean the soot and stains and dry everything using specialized equipment like dehumidifiers. Then they may need to sanitize affected areas to kill bacteria, prevent mold growth, and deodorize to eliminate any leftover smoke scents after a thorough cleaning.

What is water damage restoration?

While water is essential for human survival, it can be disastrous if it gets into the wrong places in a property. Water damage restoration involves cleaning and restoring the water-damaged property to its preloss state.

The first step in restoring water damage is to remove any standing water. Property owners should act quickly to get rid of as much standing water as they can following a flood. This effort will reduce the level of damage to the property.

Water damage restoration experts use industrial pumps and other equipment to extract standing water from a property.

After clearing the standing water, they’ll dry out any remaining moisture. They’ll then use dehumidifiers and moisture detectors to dry the affected areas.

After everything is cleared, the expert will sterilize the affected areas to kill off bacteria and prevent mold growth. They may also need to deodorize the space to make the air breathable.

The last part of the water damage restoration process is the reconstruction, where damaged parts are reconstructed, and irrecoverable structures are cut off and replaced.

Difference between water and fire damage restoration

The fire damage and water damage restoration processes are similar. However, water damage restoration is a part of the fire damage restoration process, as you often need to clean and dry out the water used to put off the fire.

The major difference is that fire damage restoration requires more extensive cleaning to clear out the soot and often requires replacing or reconstructing the burnt part of the property.

With water damage restoration, you may not need to reconstruct the affected area if you act quickly and dry it up.

SERVPRO of Metairie explains the steps to seasonal hazard restoration

11/10/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Metairie explains how to protect your property against seasonal hazards.

There are seasonal changes in Jefferson, LA, that can have a devastating impact on your property. Your home or business space can suffer damage from heavy storms, snow, ice, bushfires, and extreme summer heat.

Although it is impossible to predict or prevent extreme weather conditions and unforeseen disasters, you can considerably reduce their effects by planning ahead of time.

The team at SERVPRO of Metairie, a leading seasonal hazards and restoration company, has put together these tips to help you prepare for seasonal hazards.

1. Ensure everyone's safety

Nobody likes to think about seasonal disasters, but sometimes they are inevitable, and being prepared can save lives. It's essential to establish emergency actions if you live in an area susceptible to specific hazards like wild storms or bushfires.

Assign an emergency assembly area and ensure everyone in the building can get there in case of a disaster. Also, ensure that your emergency kit is well-stocked and conveniently located to be easily found.

Check that everyone in your family or staff has access to emergency phone numbers on their mobile devices. This way, they can easily reach out to the authorities for help in a disaster.

2. Verify your insurance coverage

It's easy to assume you have insurance, but most people don't do routine reviews. Check the validity of all your insurance policies, including those covering your property and car, as part of your seasonal hazard preparation.

Also, read through the policy documentation and any applicable Product Disclosure Statements to understand precisely what is covered and whether you'll need additional coverage.

Having valid insurance is essential when dealing with disasters. You can rest assured you'll get help if things get worse.

3. Safeguard your property

While you have no control over the weather, you can lessen the chance that a storm, flood, or bushfire will cause permanent damage to your property by keeping it in good shape.

There are various maintenance steps you can implement to keep your property safe, including the following:

  • Trim back trees and shrubs.
  • Clear leaves and twigs from the property.
  • Check your roofs for missing, loose, or damaged tiles, leaks, and more.
  • Ensure you have hoses and that they are long enough to reach your property.
  • Clean gutters and downpipes.
  • Test smoke detectors, alarms, and fire extinguishers.
  • Remove and store flammable items (like wood piles) far from your property.
  • Examine the condition of the cladding and exterior walls and caulk any gaps.

It’s important that you hire professionals to handle whatever work you want to be done on your property to ensure it’s done properly. Inefficient repairs will leave your property further exposed to these seasonal elements.

4. Get help when necessary

Things can still go wrong, even with all of this preparation. Your property can be flooded due to heavy storms, and parts of your structures can be damaged by wildfire. When faced with any of these situations, you must act fast and call seasonal hazards restoration companies like SERVPRO of Metairie for help.

These restoration professionals have the tools and experience to handle various hazards and minimize damage to your property. They will come to your place quickly, help you contain the disaster, and stop further damage.

Reason Why You Should Hire Professionals After Fire Damage!

9/13/2022 (Permalink)

Fires can happen unexpectedly at any time. Some people are unprepared on what to do for the clean up after the fire occurs, which is why it is vital to hire fire damage servicing company to help get it done correctly.

  • There are four main reasons on why it is vital to hire a fire damage service professional.
  • Unforeseen damages – With the unforeseen damages in the home, it is a possibility that it is no longer safe to live in.
  • Smoke and soot. – Soot can cover a lot of things in the home and it is very difficult to remove. Smoke has a bad tendency to linger for years and many people don’t realize it’s there. There are many places that smoke can get into besides the obvious like the carpet and furniture. It can be in the walls or air ducts. This sometimes makes the air in the home unhealthy to breathe, especially for children and elderly.
  • Right equipment – Many people may try to clean the damages themselves but don’t have the right equipment to do so. Hiring a cleanup service will allow the homeowners to save time and assurance that the home is well taken care of.
  • Structural damage – There can be structural damage from fire or the water used to put out the fire.  It can lead to big problems in the future if it is not taken care of immediately.

Don’t delay the cleanup process, the sooner the cleanup gets started, the less damage repair will need to be done.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact the professionals at SERVPRO!

The Different Types of Fire Damage

8/29/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with the damage from a fire can be a long process.  The fire could have been small, but the smoke from it did the majority of the damage.  On the other side, most of the damage could have been from the fire itself.  Lastly, there could have been another layer of damage caused when the fire was extinguished.  Here are the main types of fire damage that are commonly dealt with.

Flame Damage - This could be from an electrical outlet that caused damage, all the way to a full-blown kitchen fire.

Smoke Damage - Smoke is literally in the air and can (and will) get into everything.  Even after the rebuild is completed, there can still be a lingering smell of smoke to the property unless it is dealt with correctly.

3rd Party Damage - This type of damage comes from any in-house sprinkler system used to put the fire out or from the Fire Department themselves when they get to the scene.

Heat Damage - Even though a part of the structure might have not actually caught fire, it was probably severely heated up.  This can cause structural damage and possible swelling that you might not notice right away.

After a fire, you could be dealing with flame, smoke, water and heat damage at the same time.  FEMA has some great information on what to do after the fire.  The best way to make sure that this is taken care of promptly and properly is to contact the team at SERVPRO to get on the job!

Keep Fires Out of the Kitchen | SERVPRO of Metairie

7/21/2022 (Permalink)

kitchen with wood cabinents that suffered from fire damage Keep your kitchen pristine, with these fire tips.

A grease fire happens when the cooking oil becomes too hot. When the oil heats up, the oil starts to boil and then eventually it’ll start smoking then catch on fire. Animal fats will start to smoke around 375*F and vegetable oils have a smoking point of 450*F. Whenever you’re heating oil for any reason, make sure you stay in the kitchen. Always keep a lid and clip a thermometer to the side so you always know the temperature of the oil.

If the worst happens and a grease fire does form, make sure to do the following:

  • Turn the Heat Off - Don't try to move the pot. You might accidentally splash yourself or your kitchen with burning oil. And that would be bad.
  • Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid - Fire cannot exist in the absence of oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire should quickly consume all the oxygen and put itself out. Use a metal lid since glass will shatter.
  • Spray the Pot with a Fire Extinguisher - This is your last resort, as fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen. Still, it's better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.
  • Get Out and Call 911 - If the fire does break out of control, don't try to be a hero. Get out and find a phone to call 911.

Now that we understand how grease fires start and what to do to prevent them, hopefully you’ll never be in a situation where you have to use this information. If it unfortunately happens, do the steps to ease the fire and call the cleaning experts at SERVPRO of Metairie right away! We will work nonstop to make sure it looks “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Safety Tips for the Warmer Months in Metairie, LA

4/28/2022 (Permalink)

Warm weather is on the horizon! It's time to switch from sweaters to shorts, deep fryers to grills, and indoor parties to backyard barbecues. Just because we're less inclined to switch on the heat does not mean that we shouldn't be vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves and our property from fire hazards. See below for high-risk areas for fire damage and how to maintain them.

Spring Fire Safety Tips

Fire cannot be avoided when you're preparing a perfectly cooked steak or patty on the grill. From the get-go, you've got inherent risks. Before starting a grill, be sure to check all potential problematic points including the propane tank, the hose, and all connecting points. You can do this while your meat is marinating or while you're trimming your chicken!

When starting a charcoal grill, charcoal should only be soaked with charcoal starter fluid. Avoid using lighter fluid as that can create a burst of heat and flames can get out of control quickly!

Nearly 20% of all grill structure fires occur due to failure to clean the grill before and after use. Give your grill a nice scrape down while it's hot so it's ready to go for next time!

Safety first, safety first, safety first! Fill a bucket with water and set it next to your put before you even build a fire. Avoid throwing leaves, pine cones, pine needs, and paper into a fire pit as they catch fire quickly and can result in dangerous floating embers.

In any emergency situation, always call 9-1-1 before calling SERVPRO of Metairie. Once a fire has been properly handled by the fire department, give us a call at (504) 496-0193! We're always "Here to Help!"

How to Put Out a Metairie Kitchen Grease Fire

12/8/2021 (Permalink)

No one plans to have a grease fire in the kitchen, but it can happen in an instant and you should always be prepared. If a fire breaks out on the stove in your home in Metairie, LA here are some steps to help minimize the damage.

1. Contain the Flames.

A metal lid or cookie sheet is a great tool for suffocating a fire. Covering the fire with cut-off oxygen that is fueling the fire.

2. Turn off Heat.

The faster you can get the burner cool, the better. If you can safely get to the knob on the stove to turn it off, do it!

3. Smother the Fire.

If the fire is small, use baking soda or salt to put out the flames. If you take one thing from this, you should NEVER pour water onto a grease fire, it will make it worse!

4. Recognize Limits.

If the fire is still going strong after the first three steps, call emergency services as you start your emergency exit plan.

5. Repair Damage.

No matter how small the fire is, it likely left some damage behind. Fire restoration specialists can assess the damage and restore your kitchen and any affected surrounding area to be like new again. Let them take the lead on the fire cleanup.

Bad Habits That Could Burn Your House Down

9/28/2021 (Permalink)

Fire is quick and can happen to anyone. Keep reading to find out what bad habits can cause fire damage in your home.

Disregarding Dust

Built-up dust can be a fire hazard if it collects in and around electronics, electrical sockets, and even floor heaters. Dust your electronics regularly.

Misusing Electric Blankets

Never allow pets to snuggle up on top, and don't pile extra covers over the electric blanket, because excessive heat buildup may lead to a fire. Keep your electric blanket at its lowest setting, never bend the coils, and always turn it off in the morning.

Neglecting Appliance Recalls

To keep on top of recalls and prevent disaster in your home, register your appliance with the manufacturer or go to www.recalls.gov to find out if any of your models are on the list.

Dryer Lint

Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct regularly, as well as the interior of the dryer frame, to clear away lint and clogs, and reduce the risk of fire.

Letting Your Laptop Overheat

When you leave your computer on your bed, couch, rug, or other soft, flammable surface, you run the risk of restricting airflow through the cooling vents, which can cause your laptop to overheat and possibly catch fire.

Choosing the Wrong Wattage

Installing a light bulb with a wattage that is too high for a lamp or light fixture is a leading cause of electrical fires. Always check the light fixture’s maximum wattage, and never go over the recommended rating.

Ignoring Uninvited Guests

Mice and other rodents like to gnaw on electrical wires. Over time, they can remove the sheathing, leaving the wires exposed. Unfortunately, the electric current that travels through the wire generates heat, and in the absence of sheathing, this could lead to sparks caused by short circuits, which in turn could ignite the surrounding surfaces.

Leaving Candles Unattended

While you’re away, animals could knock the flame over, or a draft could cause the flame to flare up and ignite nearby flammable items. Always keep lit candles in sight and out of reach of pets, children, or flammables like drapes.

Who is the Best Restoration Company in the Metairie Area?

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

Ever asked yourself WHY SERVPRO is a proven industry leader in fire damage restoration? To begin with, we use advanced technology and techniques when restoring your property to its original state. We adhere to the standards set by the IICRC (The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification). For instance, we may use infrared cameras to detect locations affected by the water that was used to extinguish the fire. Also, we can use hygrometers and moisture detectors to determine the level of moisture saturation in your Metairie home.

Strong odors can develop in your property after it experienced a fire damage event in Metairie. Our SERVPRO team uses appropriate equipment to remove the contaminants and improve the quality of air in the structure. Some of the devices that we use during deodorization and odor removal include thermal Foggers and air scrubbers. Spraying the air with a fragrant has never been a good way of dealing with the odors. Our team locates and removes the odor-causing particles. Through thermal fogging, we dispense deodorizing agents that neutralize the smell-causing particles.

We understand that restoration and cleaning situations require an immediate response, and that is why we are strategically located. We know that no disaster is too big or too small, so, we give every call the seriousness it deserves. By acting quickly, we increase the chances of salvaging most items and low the restoration costs.

Depending on the surfaces we are attending to and the soot particles in your property, our SERVPRO technicians may decide to use dry or wet cleaning methods. We never repaint surfaces as a way of dealing with soot; we have to choose an appropriate cleaning procedure before we do the needed repainting. We have faced all fire damage incidents you can think of, which means we are competent enough to work for you.

Spring Cleaning and Fire Safety in Your Metairie Home

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

Spring is in full swing and if you haven’t started your spring cleaning, now is the time! Not only will it get your house in tip-top shape, but you can also look for any areas that can cause fire damage in your Metairie home.

Replace batteries in your home.

Batteries can die in items even if you aren't using them often. Start with replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and flashlights. Other batteries that may need to be changed are security cameras, alarm systems, and smart locks on your home.

Dryer Vents

Other than routinely cleaning your lint filter out before and after loads, you should also be making sure that the outdoor dryer flaps are not blocked by build-up or animal nests. This can be a DIY project or you can hire a professional.

Check on any extension cords.

Check to make sure that extension cords are not overloaded, frayed, or cracked. Replace where needed and try to move electronics if too many are in one extension.

Propane/charcoal grills should remain outside.

Your propane/charcoal grill should be stored and used outside only. Make sure that the grill is routinely cleaned and someone is always tending to the grill when in use.

Clean outside debris

Make sure to clean up dead leaves and trash from around your house. These items may be dangerous if exposed to heat, and in the event, there is a fire it will exacerbate it.

SERVPRO of Metairie is here to help with any preventative cleaning needs or fire needs. If emergency services are needed due to a fire or any other disaster give us a call 24 hours a day at 504.496.0193.

  1. Ensure all lights are not frayed or broken and put at most three on one extension cord.

  4. If hanging decorations off your roof, make sure your ladder has stable placement and wear traction wielding shoes.

Cooking Safety with SERVPRO® of Metairie

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

With Fire Prevention Week quickly approaching, SERVPRO® of Metairie wants to share our top cooking tips to prevent household fires and injury. Cooking can be a way to come together as a family, but did you know most house fires are caused in the kitchen from the stovetop?

Stovetop fires are normally caused when food is left unattended. Always be sure to pay attention to what you are cooking, especially if cooking with oil or at high temperatures. Be sure to remove food packaging, dish towels, paper towels, wooden utensils, and oven mitts away from the stovetop that can easily be burned or catch onto an open flame.

Make sure all appliances are in working order and unplugged when not in use. Crumb trays should be emptied, and fallen food should be cleaned from the oven and microwave when cooled. Be sure to never use metal in the microwave as it can easily spark and cause a fire.

When cooking, it is best to wear tight-fitting clothing and tie long hair back. Baggy clothes, long hair, and dangling sleeves can easily catch the hot burner or open flame. If your clothes or hair catches on fire, be sure to STOP - DROP -  and ROLL to smother the flame. It is also best to keep your cooking zone “child-free” so children do not touch hot appliances, or get burned by hot liquids or flames.

white fire alarm being tested by a person If you experience any property damage due to a fire, we are here to help. Contact SERVPRO of Metairie to learn more.

A house fire is never a pleasant experience, but did you know there are ways to lessen the chances that one will occur? Prevention is the best strategy for dealing with house fires because of how rapidly they can spread through the home and how destructive they can be once they start.

Ensuring that you are doing all you can to protect your home can go a long way in making sure you never have to go through the house fire experience. You can keep your family much safer and have the peace of mind that you are doing all you can to not have to experience a fire at all.

Doing What You Can to Reduce Your Fire Risk at Home

Check your smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are always the first step in improving your household fire safety, as they will be the thing that notifies you if a fire has started. Be sure to do a monthly test to make sure they are operational, and keep track of when they were installed so you know when to replace the unit altogether.

Create a fire escape plan. A fire escape plan is an important component of safety, as your family should know what to do if the smoke alarm sounds. It should take under two minutes to escape, which is why it is so important to formulate a solid plan and practice it regularly as a family.

Limit your fire risks. Your daily habits can go a long way in reducing the chances that a fire will ever occur. Small tasks, like cleaning your dryer’s lint tray with every load, avoiding placing towels next to your stove and not leaving your cooking unattended, can cut down on some of the most major fire risks that there are.

Keep a fire extinguisher handy. While fire extinguishers should only be used if it is absolutely safe to do so, they can prevent a small mistake from turning into a household disaster. Any time there is an open flame present, it is good to have an operational fire extinguisher nearby and be sure you know how to use it just in case things get out of hand.

If your home is damaged by a house fire, we are here to help. Our expert fire restoration technicians are here 247 to spring into action as soon as you call. Contact us at any hour to report your damage and receive a quick response.

To maintain security and protect against further damage, our team will board up any missing windows and place tarps over damaged roofs.

Once the home is free of debris, water, and smoke we can start to clean up and sanitize the property. For items that can be restored, we can remove odor and bring it back to pre-fire condition. After these steps, the restoration process can begin and you can get your home and life back to normal. We will walk through your home to make sure everything is up to your standards and you are completely satisfied.

Candle Alternatives that Aren’t a Downgrade

8/19/2020 (Permalink)

Candles are a great way to light up, decorate, and make your home smell like fresh leaves, a beach vacation, or sitting by the campfire. However, According to the NFPA, from 2014-2018, there were an estimated 7,610 house fires that were started by candles per year that caused an annual average of 81 deaths, 677 injuries, and $278 million in property damage. Save your Metairie home, and use these candle alternatives instead!

Flame-less candles

For those who just want the aesthetic of a candle and no scent, flame-less candles are a great option! They are typically battery-operated and give the same flame-like feature as real candles.

Wax warmer

Wax warmers are a great alternative because you can get that amazing scent that comes from real candles without the hazard. Warmers are typically either battery or outlet operated to melt the wax.

Diffuser

Calling all of our essential oil fans, this one is for you! With hundreds of combinations to try, diffusers are a great option for the whole house.

Fairy lights

Although they have no scent, fairy lights are a great way to light up and make a room feel cozy! Most fairy lights also come in with a standard plug or are battery operated.

Stick diffusers

The most low maintenance option is a stick diffuser. Put your scent in the vase and let the sticks do the work.

Room spray

Another great option with endless scents is a room spray. You can buy pre-made ones, or make your own for that signature scent for your home!

If you still plan to opt for a candle, be sure to trim the wick before each use to minimize sparking, place the candle where it can’t fall or be knocked over, and always blow out the candle anytime you leave the room or plan to leave the home.

SERVPRO of Metairie is the fire restoration experts.

It is great to spend your time outdoors and enjoy a good, grilled meal during the summer, but it is important to always keep fire safety in mind when you do so. While grilling is a frequent activity for many of us, any time an open flame is introduced, there is the potential for a fire to begin.

Predictably, grill fires tend to peak during summertime, and the U.S. Fire Administration has found that nearly 6,000 occur annually. A few grill safety tips can go a long way in preventing fires, however, so getting into the habit of these actions below will significantly increase your fire safety.

A Few Grill Fire Safety Tips That Go a Long Way

Create a safe zone around your grill. Though the primary focus is on convenience when you are finding a place to situate your grill, do not neglect safety concerns. Keep at least three feet around the grill free of children, pets and flammable materials, including decks and siding in case of a flare-up.

Clean your grill grates often. Over time, grease and other particles can build up on grill grates, making cooking less consistent and leading to an increased fire concern. Grease fires can be particularly dangerous to deal with, so simply scraping off your grates after each use is the best way to stay safe from these incidents.

Never leave the grill unattended. If a fire were to start and you (and your fire extinguisher) are nearby, you can put it out before it causes damage in many cases. However, if the grill is unattended, a disaster can quickly occur. Even if you are just taking a short break, be sure there is someone around to keep an eye on the grill at all times when it is lit.

Inspect the grill regularly. Every time you use your grill, do a simple visual inspection to ensure everything appears to be in good shape. With propane-powered grills, there is always a potential that a gas leak could develop, which can be disastrous if an open flame is introduced. Doing your due diligence to check these things is a smart way to be fire safe.

If you have a grill fire that does damage to your home, we are here to help. You can call us any time, day or night, to have a quick response from our restoration experts.

What To Expect After A Fire Strikes in Your New Orleans Home

7/30/2019 (Permalink)

Better To Be Safe Than Sorry

Among the most pressing of concerns following a fire in your New Orleans home are the dangers that you cannot see. From structural integrity loss to widespread effects from the fire itself, many homeowners are not fully aware of just how detrimental the situation can be for their health and wellness. Understanding these concerns can help you to appreciate your need for professional restoration services following such an incident in your residence.

Once first responders have extinguished the blaze, you have a mindset of getting the fire damage restored in your New Orleans home. Your insurance company is going to want to get their own assessment of the full scope of the damage, which is part of the service that our SERVPRO team provides. Even with a confirmation that the fire is entirely out, a homeowner could encounter many potential hazards in photographing the damage or cataloging ruined contents.

One of the first potential pitfalls that a homeowner might encounter after fire damages is the weakening of structural components and construction materials throughout the residence. These could be ceiling materials, walls, flooring, supports, framework, and more. These weakened portions of material are unstable and can fall, collapse, or give way with little or even no pressure at all. Our SERVPRO technicians get uniquely trained to handle safety concerns like these through both our assessment and throughout the restoration process.

The air quality is another concern that should give a homeowner pause before rushing back into their home after a fire. There is any number of potential contaminants, smoke, and debris floating around in the environment that could adversely affect your health. Our professionals have personal protective equipment designed to improve their air quality until the appropriate measures are taken via air scrubbers to detoxify the atmosphere.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

It might seem like you are getting the ball rolling quickly for yourself by assessing the damage on behalf of your insurance company before filing a claim. Our SERVPRO of Metairie team works directly with insurance providers and their adjusters to catalog the full scope of the damage and help to expedite the claims process to get restoration started promptly. Don't Burn Baby Burn!

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Summer is a time to get out and have fun. But the weather isn’t the only thing that heats up during these few months. Be aware of the risk of fires and prepare by checking the batteries in your smoke detectors and having functioning fire extinguishers.

5,700 homes experience grill related fires every year. In fact 57% of fires happen within four months; May, June, July, and August. Grill fires happen when someone mishandles the igniting of the grill with a spark or flame. Mechanical issues such as broken containers or pipes also can increase the risk of causing a fire.

For precautionary measures, before the startup of grilling season check your grills condition , clean it, check the drip pan, and thing else that could potentially have grease on it from previous cookouts. Inspect each part of your barbecue pit to make sure everything is attached properly. Also, be sure you are in a grill-friendly environment free of branches, roofs or any sort of overhang when igniting the grill. Be prepared for a fire, as grease and fat are likely to catch on fire. Keep baking soda near the grill in case a grease fire breaks out. If you find yourself faced with a fire emergency this summer, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Metairie! 504-468-3046

Mid-City Fire & Water Restoration

All it takes is the tiniest teeny flame and poof! A fire starts without warning and absolutely no planning. On Thursday May 2, 2019 the residents of a New Orleans apartment complex experienced the imminent fear when a three alarm fire suddenly took place. Thankfully no injuries were reported however, this instance helps you to think twice about fire safety and preventatives.

When moving, most people are so burnt out from all the packing and hauling when it comes time for the unloading they simply place boxes down wherever. The majority of people will place kitchen boxes on the counter tops and stove without thinking twice. It’s just another surface. What people don’t think twice about is the danger of doing so. While moving into the apartment, newly tenants had placed a box of their belongings on top of the stove, which hit the knob without any knowledge of it. This caused the box to go up in flames and spread. Thankfully the fire department was able to put out the fire promptly. Unfortunately by doing so not only did the Miid-Ciity, New Orleans complex suffer fire damage but also water damage as well.

SERVPRO of Metairie plans for the unexpected! The team was able to get to the location in just a few short hours after the fire took place. They began to start water mitigation using dehumidifiers and air scrubbers. Residents were pleased with the results, by getting the equipment in so quickly it was able to eliminate the odor and got it under control.

SERVPRO of Metairie is available to help any local home or business restore their water or fire damaged property. Call the trusted restoration leaders in the Greater New Orleans area, SERVPRO of Metairie for any of your needs. (504) 496-0193.

SERVPRO Can Help Speed the Process of Fire Damage Recovery in Your Metaire Home

3/10/2019 (Permalink)

Home cooked dinner gone wrong? SERVPRO can help you restore your Metairie home fast and effectively.

Restoring Normalcy after Fire Damage in Metairie

Even a small fire can leave your property looking like a warzone with partially burnt items strewn all over, and smoke residues or other forms of soiling on different surfaces. Luckily most fires are put out before gutting the entire structure. However, this leads to significant cleanup and restoration work before normalcy returns.

Most homeowners dealing with fire damage in Metairie are first timers, so they have very little information on what to do. It is not unusual to think that every blackened item or surface needs to be thrown out after the incident. Our SERVPRO team includes a project manager who oversees the entire process. Apart from managing the rest of the crew, the project manager advises the property owner on crucial steps to take such as boarding up the property to present additional damages and also liaises with the insurance adjuster to ensure every aspect of the damage is fixed “Like it never even happened.”

Salvaging some materials and contents of the house can help reduce the total restoration cost. Proper inspection of items and using advanced restoration techniques help in the salvage process. Our SERVPRO team separates items into groups of salvageable, unsalvageable and questionable items. We clean salvageable items on site and move the questionable ones offsite for in-depth inspection and cleaning. We use electronic CCIS, Content Claim Inventory Service, which helps keep better track on contents and return them to their original location in the house after restoration.

Water-related problems such as mold infestation can develop soon after a fire incident because of the water used to put out the fire and in the cleanup processes. Drying off excess moisture helps prevent these problems. Our SERVPRO technicians use different moisture detection tools to determine which drying processes are necessary. Thermo-hygrometers help establish the levels of relative humidity in affected and unaffected areas. We also use moisture sensors to probe materials and determine the level of moisture they hold. We then use air movers and dehumidifiers to dry them to preloss state.

In case of fire damage, call SERVPRO of Metairie to help restore normalcy. You can reach us at (504) 496-0193 any time.

Fire Losses Get Special Cleanup Efforts from SERVPRO for Metairie Houses

SERVPRO Follows the Fire Department in Metairie and New Orleans Areas to Cleanup and Restore Homes

Restoration for Your Home in Metairie After Fire Damage

Experiencing a home fire of any size is scary and overwhelming. You have a lot to deal with now in keeping your family together and safe while you are unable to reside in your home. However, dealing with the damage as soon as possible is essential to prevent further damages to your structure and belongings.

Fire damage to your residence in Metairie needs to be addressed by professionals as soon as the fire is out. SERVPRO’s technicians have the training and tools required especially for this type of situation. We also understand that it is a stressful time for you and your family, so we strive to take some of the pressure off.

Many homes have various types of wood surfaces, which require a variety of cleaning methods after a fire depending on how the wood was finished. Our SERVPRO FSRT technicians follow IICRC guidelines to maximize recovery. When it comes to unfinished wood, it is porous so it can absorb smoke residues which cause discoloration or staining. Apply wet cleaning products can allow the residues to penetrate deeper. For light residues, we use dry cleaning methods like brushing, vacuuming, and dry sponge cleaning. Thicker residues can be cleaned with denatured alcohol. If all else fails, sanding and sealing the wood may be required.

Finished wood can usually be wet cleaned. Pre-cleaning by vacuuming heavily soiled areas or dry sponging will assist in the overall process. Massive smoke damage requires more aggressive procedures and may respond to a wood crème cleaner. For severe damage, the wood can be stripped and refinished.

Laminated woods are constructed of particle board, pressed wood, or plywood, to which surface veneers adhere. We can pre-clean with the same dry-cleaning methods and wet clean using a general surface cleaner. When finished the cleanser can be rinsed, and we dry the area.

When it comes to the structural integrity of your home, the framing may need replacing after severe fire damage. If there is a significant loss, we ensure that a structural engineer or building inspector approves the restoration.

SERVPRO of Metairie is here to help you after fire damage occurs in your home in Lafreniere Park, Metairie, or the surrounding areas. Please call us as soon as the fire is out at (504) 496-0193 so we can get your home back to the way it was before.

How Fire Damage In Metairie Does Not Stand A Chance Against Our Team At SERVPRO

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Not all fire-related problems can be solved so quickly and may require the help of a professional mitigation and restoration company to eliminate.

Separating The Temporary And The Long-Lasting In Metairie Fire Damage

Most homes in Metairie with fire damage show immediately apparent signs of it - from tar-coated walls and ceilings to warped materials and deep-seated odors, the signs and symptoms of a recent fire should be apparent to anyone walking through the home. However, not all of these effects are permanent, and some may go away with some light cleanup and a little bit of time.

Of course, not all fire-related problems can be solved so quickly and may require the help of a professional mitigation and restoration company like SERVPRO to eliminate. Here is a brief overview of what should and should not be troubling you for years to come after a fire.

Damage That Sticks Around
Many of the lasting effects of fire damage to Metairie homes only become apparent once temporary considerations have been pushed aside. Smoke odors can remain in a home for many years after a fire but may be impossible to identify while the area is still dirty and coated in ash. Other issues have much to do with ash, soot, and other materials being given the time and opportunity to settle in and create more long-lasting consequences for the home. SERVPRO's fast response times and mitigation strategies help to control how much of this deep, costly damage takes root after a fire.

Problems That Go Away
Some of the most worrisome signs of damage when you first look at the aftermath of a fire are often among the easiest to clean up. Heavy coats of ash can create an ugly picture in your home but are often swept away with ease. Discolored walls and other surfaces are also easily fixed with a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. Keep in mind, however, that precision care must be exercised during the cleanup of these materials to avoid the creation of caustic or otherwise damaging substances in the home.

SERVPRO of Metairie responds quickly to fire damage calls in the local area to prevent as much damage as possible from happening in your home. Contact us at (504) 496-0193 for our help.

Cleaning Fire Damage In Metairie Homes

8/27/2018 (Permalink)

The majority of Metairie home fires are usually restricted to one or two rooms and extinguished quickly.

Cleaning Fire Damage

The majority of Metairie home fires are usually restricted to one or two rooms and extinguished quickly. Physical damage usually happens to building material like ceiling tiles, drywall, and other property that our technicians can quickly remove and replace.

The majority of Metairie fire damage usually comes from residues left behind after the fire department or a sprinkler system extinguishes the flames and stops smoke movement. SERVPRO restoration teams deal primarily with dry and wet smoke residues, but also have the expertise to clean and remove protein and fuel oil smoke residues as well.

Dry and wet residues generate from the same fire, just at different stages. When the fire is oxygen-rich and burning fast, smoke residues left are powdery and dry. In the beginning, or once fire suppression efforts begin, the fire has an oxygen-poor environment. It burns more slowly at these times and leaves a wet, sticky residue.

Cleaning dry residues is a simpler process, and often allows our technicians to restore more items to their original condition, preventing loss of property. That is because dry residues have less aerosol moisture and do not penetrate surfaces as deeply as wet residues. The odor from dry residues is not as strong as wet residue odors. In most cases, SERVPRO technicians can remove these residues with a dry sponge or cloth, wiping them off surfaces. For upholstered items like sofas, technicians can clean them with a stiff brush.

Wet residues contain higher levels of aerosols and are more difficult to clean. The aerosols are usually furniture varnishes, solvents and other liquids burned off from damaged property. Smoke moves slower in an oxygen-poor fire, so the residues penetrate surfaces deeper, and leave stronger odors. Cleaning and removing wet residues requires a cleaning agent along with sponges and brushes to break up them up for removal. If the residues penetrate plastic surfaces, they stain almost immediately and usually require disposal and replacement.

Protein residues result from kitchen fires when one of the sources is either, fish, beef, or chicken. They leave yellowish stains, which we can clean like a wet residue, but the odors are more pungent and difficult to remove. If the fire burned long enough, odors penetrate the entire home and technicians need stronger cleaners to eliminate them, and often require multiple methods to eliminate them completely.

Fuel oil is not a common residue problem in Louisiana, but when an oil burner in a furnace malfunction, it can be a large problem. The residue particles are dry, but they form crusty layers on affected surfaces. That makes them more difficult to remove without damaging walls and ceilings. Technicians use strong cleaners with a brush or stiff sponge and repeat cleaning until the surface is clean or they determine that it is cheaper to replace the item.

The goal of SERVPRO of Metairie is to restore each home to its pre-fire condition. If you need our services, call (504) 496-0193 today for a visit.

The Cost Of Fire Restoration In Your Metairie Home

7/10/2018 (Permalink)

Fires are an unexpected catastrophe to families, especially when its damage is far-reaching and costly.

The Cost Of Fire Restoration

Fires are an unexpected catastrophe to families, especially when its damage is far-reaching and costly. Without the right information, you have no idea how long restoration could take for your Metairie home, or how much that this project ultimately costs. Understanding your role in the equation is critical for a sound working relationship as your home gets restored.

The more that you know about estimation practices and pricing, the better prepared you are to understand the sheer volume of work and care that goes into restoring fire damage in your Metairie home. Our policy is to be as upfront as possible with both insurance adjusters or property managers, but also to do the same for the individual clients as well.

Restoration costs might appear high when you first get a glimpse at estimates and figures thrown around after our SERVPRO estimator completes the initial inspection. What you may not notice is that this overall value consists of multiple factors rolled into one, stretching far beyond the physical bodies set in place to restore your home. There are costs incurred with transporting and retrieving equipment needed to restore your home, for example.

The administrative side of things is another area where the added expense is necessary. With every restoration job that our SERVPRO team undertakes, steps must be taken to document this job both in writing and in photographs. This portion of your estimated bill takes into account assessments of measurements, the sketches for layouts of your home, and even the costs associated with determining the cost of the job.

These estimates are a requirement for insurance companies and property managers as they detail the full scope of the work to get performed and compare that against a regional breakdown of restoration costs.

The amount of time that it takes to complete the work that technicians determine is necessary varies from project to project. When work begins, it is under an understanding that timetables given to date are mere projections of completion. If you need restoration services for your property, trust in our SERVPRO of Metairie technicians to respond swiftly and get the job done correctly. Give us a call anytime at (504) 496-0193.

Professional Cleaning Techniques Used In Metairie Fire Damage Restoration

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

If a fire damages your home call SERVPRO to make it "Like it never even happened."

No two fires are alike, and each requires a range of techniques employed by our certified technicians.

One of the most useful skills restoration experts bring after fire damages your Metairie home is the ability to match the appropriate strategy, tools, and products to the specific issues a fire inflicted upon your house. Proceeding with technicians trained to Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards is crucial. We offer the crews and the equipment necessary to resolve your fire damage emergency successfully.

Depending on the types of materials combusted, the fire damage to your Metairie home may need several different approaches to restoration. Materials that burn quickly and hot can combust almost wholly, deposit lighter ash and soot. Examples might be paper and dry wood structural components. Our crew takes care of this type of loose debris with HEPA filtered vacuums, dry sponges, and brushing.

If the fire involved damp materials or plastics and fabrics it probably burned more slowly, at a lower temperature, and less thoroughly. The aftermath when these items char tends toward dark, odiferous smoke full of unburned particles. These bits deposit in thick coatings that adhere to surfaces. SERVPRO employees use spray and wipe techniques, choosing cleansers that loosen the soot so that cloths follow to remove the coatings.

Food fires deposit a thin but tenacious layer of almost lacquer-like debris on surfaces. It also contributes to a persistent odor that must also be eliminated as the SERVPRO team manages the scene. We employ abrasive cleaners teamed with abrasive tools to break down the coating. Our team is familiar with how to remove the soot without damaging surfaces, a delicate balance learned during our continuing training.

Some items like intricately detailed glassware or window blinds can require immersion cleaning to get all of the soot off and out of crevices. SERVPRO production employees often inventory and remove these difficult to clean items to an off-property site where we use large tubs, specialized cleaners and methods, and even advanced technology like ultrasonic cleaning that utilizes the power of sound waves to dislodge the dirt and smoky residues.

Take the opportunity to use the skills and experience of SERVPRO of Metairie when your home’s structure and contents suffer fire damage. Call (504) 496-0193 24/7 for a fast response and professional fire damage restoration plan.
