SERVPRO of Metairie Called to Restore Hotel Storm Damage Three Hours Away from Home Base

SERVPRO of Metairie crews traveled to Kinder, Louisiana after a possible tornado touched down in the area and damaged a hotel. Eric Pennington, our Production Manager, reports we made the three-hour, nearly 200-mile trip when an insurance adjuster working with the property’s owners reached out for our help to dry out and restore the structure.

Storms the morning of March 29, 2018, in Allen Parish, included reports of suspected EF -1 tornadic activity. The severe weather experienced by the Kinder lodging tore the metal roof from the hotel permitting quantities of water to enter. Eric relates that about 32 rooms affected by the devastation needed attention from our well-trained work team.

The plan devised requires demolition activity to remove wet building materials. Drywall, insulation, ceilings, and carpeting deemed too saturated to restore need removal and disposal. Our employees work quickly to pull the saturated structural components and fixtures from the premises.

Materials remaining within the hotel after the demolition received applied structural drying. We use powerful, high-efficiency air movers and dehumidifiers to reduce the moisture content to normal levels. Eric asserts that rapid and complete drying using appropriate equipment and industry standard techniques is crucial to inhibit any microbial activity that can follow water incursions.

The SERVPRO of Metairie employees pack out the furnishings in about 10 rooms during the restoration process. On-site storage keeps these items safe during the demolition and dry out, ready to be reinstalled after the recovery completes. Our employees carefully wrap the items to prevent inadvertent damage and keep an inventory to ensure proper replacement in each affected room after the dry out and build back resolves the damage affecting the hotel.

Eric expects the entire process to extend over five to six days. The efforts of our SERVPRO team focus on bringing the hotel back to its preloss condition, just “Like it never even happened.”
